A fake tech support call almost compromised an Atlanta office. Learn how spotting red flags early helped avoid a costly data breach.

Atlanta Tech Support Scam: How One Call Nearly Compromised Our Office

An Unexpected Call That Could’ve Cost Everything

One quiet Tuesday morning, everything seemed normal in our Atlanta office—until the phone rang.
The caller claimed to be from “Microsoft Tech Support.” He sounded professional, knew our company name, and even referenced an alleged security alert coming from one of our computers.
As office manager, I was used to fielding vendor calls, but this one felt urgent. He insisted we had malware infecting our network and needed to “remote in” to stop the spread.
Something didn’t sit right.

What Is a Tech Support Scam?

A tech support scam is a form of social engineering where cybercriminals impersonate IT professionals to trick users into giving access to their devices or network. The goal? Steal sensitive data, install malware, or even demand money for fake services.

  • Posing as Microsoft, Apple, or well-known software vendors
  • Claiming your network or devices are infected
  • Offering to “fix” the issue remotely
  • Asking for remote access tools like TeamViewer or AnyDesk
  • Requesting payment via gift cards or wire transfer

Red Flags That Saved Us

Luckily, I had recently attended a cybersecurity lunch-and-learn hosted by our IT provider, which covered phishing red flags and social engineering tactics. Here’s what stood out in that moment:

1. Urgency and Pressure

He kept saying, “If you don’t act now, the infection will spread.” Urgency is a common tactic scammers use to make you skip critical thinking.

2. Unsolicited Call

We hadn’t submitted a ticket. Real IT support doesn’t reach out unless you’ve asked.

3. Asking for Remote Access

He insisted I install a remote tool. That’s a major no-go unless it’s a verified technician.

4. No Internal Verification

He didn’t know our internal support code or our actual IT provider—he only pretended to.

What We Did Next

I told the caller I’d call him back and hung up. Then, I immediately reported the incident to our Managed IT provider, who confirmed it was a scam.
They launched a preventive check, ensured there was no compromise, and even sent out a staff-wide email explaining what happened. Training reminders were included.
Thanks to this process, we stopped the scam before it could do any damage.

  • Employees often multitask and may fall for convincing calls
  • Office managers wear many hats and can feel pressured to act fast

If your company isn’t protected by proactive IT monitoring and response, it’s not a matter of if but when.
