Facebook Emoji Tracking

Facebook Emoji Tracking

Facebook’s new emojis offer a wider range of quick reactions to posts but Facebook emoji tracking allows them to mold what appears in your News Feed.

Facebook Emojis

Facebook users recently saw new emoji options below their News Feed posts recently but these options have also allowed for improved Facebook emoji tracking.

The addition of the new Facebook emojis definitely expand how we “Like” something  They range from the familiar “thumbs up” to stronger emotions such as “love” and “angry.”  This is a feature we’ve all probably wanted for a while.  (Having to explain that we’re showing support and not enjoying that our friends’ pets are sick or that their sink’s pipes burst is awkward.)  But this new feature also comes with some strings attached:  Facebook emoji tracking.

Facebook has stated that it is keeping tabs on the emojis users click and this isn’t just for broad statistical purposes.  The emojis you use and the topics they’re applied to are being collated and parsed to further tailor your News Feed.  What you like and what you don’t helps Facebook refine the posts you see in order to keep your News Feed as engaging as possible.  When Facebook understands what best reaches its users, it can pass on that information to people hoping to advertise through social media.  A recent example can be seen in the increase in videos across Facebook.  Analytics showed that videos held user attention better than articles and thus Facebook began encouraging video-based posts.

There are some who might not appreciate having their emotions surveyed day in and day out through Facebook emoji tracking.  Many of us remember the recent research project in which Facebook subtly altered around 700,000 users’ News Feeds to test their emotional reactions.  That didn’t sit well with everyone.  Even if you didn’t mind, however, it’s easy to see the new Facebook emoji tracking as extensions of these tests.  The system underlying the emojis will sculpt a user’s News Feed into a more pleasant experience which, as the research shows, does yield results.  Facebook emoji tracking will also be used to collect more refined data to fuel further changes in the future.

The new reaction emojis give users more nuanced ways to respond to the posts they see in their News Feeds.  They also allow Facebook to move beyond the binary of “Like” or nothing in their data collection.  Ultimately it will be up to each Facebook user to decide if they’ll go along with Facebook emoji tracking for the sake of quicker expression or not.

Voice Recognition Software

Can voice recognition software help you improve your productivity? We take a look.

An example of a voice recognition software icon

Voice recognition software is becoming much more common in today’s gadgets. From composing texts on our phones to accessing devices like Amazon’s Echo, voice recognition software and apps continue to see improvements and integration. Voice recognition software is perhaps most useful in getting ideas onto virtual paper. Even those who aren’t writing their first novel or fleshing out a screenplay idea do some kind of writing. Emails, reports, social media posts, presentations, even simple to-do lists are daily tasks for most of us. Voice recognition software can provide a way to write these more effectively and efficiently.

Saving Time
When you’re overloaded with professional or personal obligations (probably both) driving can seem about as productive as twiddling your thumbs. There isn’t much you can do on your phone or your car’s onboard devices. Some state and local governments disallow even hands-free phone calls. With voice recognition software, however, you can dictate while you drive, making commutes and business trips more productive. With mobile devices, you can also quickly record ideas when you’re on the go outside your vehicle. You won’t have to worry about forgetting that great Facebook post you thought of while in the middle of your jog again.

Overcoming Setbacks
Typing words into a computer isn’t easy for everyone. Staring at a computer screen, using a keyboard through hand and wrist pain, even sitting in the same position for long periods simply isn’t possible for some people. This is especially true as we age when eyestrain, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and other conditions begin to appear. Learning disabilities such as dyslexia can also hamper writing. All of these issues can be avoided using voice recognition software.

Will It Work?
We’ve all seen hilariously bad subtitles generated by voice recognition software on our televisions or in YouTube videos. While it’s true that voice recognition software can make errors (even big ones) it’s also true that errors happen about as often in typed text. Such errors also decrease as the voice recognition software adapts to your speech patterns and accent the more they’re used. This lets you “train” the software to avoid some errors that you’ll see early on.

Another potential pitfall is that you will probably want to be alone when using the software. Some people are certainly self-conscious about “talking to themselves” at first, but this goes away with time. Background speech or animal vocalizations can also confuse the software and lead to errors.

All in all, as voice recognition software technology improves, an app for your favorite device might let you complete all the writing you need to fit into your busy day.

Data Storage Forever

A new method of optical data storage can record large amounts of data in a small space and still be readable billions of years in the future.

Optical Data Storage Forever

Data storage has always been one of the main components of information systems.  From the punched cards of early computers through today’s smallest drives, data storage has come a long way!  Recently we’ve seen a more recent advance – optical data storage discs such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs – become less common.  Many of today’s new computers don’t come with an optical drive standard.  Optical data storage may soon make a comeback, however, given some new advancements announced recently.

Scientists at the University of Southampton have made major breakthroughs in data storage using ulrafast lasers that produce very short, intense light pulses.  These lasers write information onto small discs of fused quartz glass, creating three layers of nanostructured dots.  These self-assembled nanostructures change the way light moves through the glass, modifying the light’s polarisation.  These changes can then be read using an optical microscope and a polariser.  Data is encoded in “five dimensions” that include the nanostructures’ position in the glass (length, width, and height), their size, and their orientation.  This has given the data storage its technical name of five dimensional (or 5D) digital data.  It’s also been referred to as the “Superman memory crystal” after the devices used in the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.

So far, a coin-sized piece of digital data storage can hold up to 360 terabytes of information.  The most startling property isn’t how much data can be stored as how long it will last.  It’s estimated that the data could, at room temperature, be usable for 13.8 billion years.  This means large quantities of information can not only be stored in a very small and stable place but that the data could be around virtually forever.

The University of Southampton team is, of course, now looking for partners to further develop and commercialise 5D data storage.

What do you think of this new step forward in optical data storage?  Let us know in the comments below!

Windows 10 Update Strategy

Windows 10 becomes a recommended update for all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users, signalling a new phase in Microsoft’s marketing.

Windows 10 Update Strategy

Windows 10 Update Strategy

Windows 10 has been slowly making its way onto PCs over the last several months.  Much of this is probably thanks to the surprising free-to-upgrade option.  This has paid dividends in terms of Windows 10’s percentage of the market.  In just six months, it now accounts for 11.9 percent of global desktop operating systems.  In January, Windows 10 passed the market share of both Windows XP and Windows 8.1.  Windows 7 remains ahead by a wide margin, however, at 52.5 percent.  In October, Microsoft announced a new plan to accelerate Windows 10’s climb to the top of the market.

This initiative took effect on February 1, when Windows 7 and WIndows 8.1 users saw their Windows 10 upgrade options change from “optional” to “recommended.”  This is more than a shift in verbiage, however, as it affects how users receive and install the Windows 10 update.  Those with automatic updates enabled might see the Windows 10 upgrade all on its own, though they won’t move fully to the new system without specifically choosing to do so.  For users with the “give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” option selected, the automatic update process won’t initiate.  Similarly, folks who have disabled automatic upgrades using Group Policy settings or the registry edit won’t automatically be upgraded to Windows 10.  All in all, users of earlier versions of Windows won’t have to upgrade to Windows 10 unless they choose to – the system-wide upgrade must be initiated by the user.  Even then, new Windows 10 users can roll back to a previous operating system for 31 days after installation.

Most Windows users, however, will have some Windows 10 code on their machines no matter what.  Despite some complaints, Microsoft will continue its policy of downloading part of the Windows 10 code to users’ machines to make upgrading faster.

What do you think about Microsoft’s new OS strategy for Windows 10?  Let us know in the comments below!

Falcons’ New Video Board

The Atlanta Falcons are getting the NFL’s largest video board in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Everyone loves a huge TV and they don’t get much bigger than a sporting arena video board.  The NFL’s biggest game is almost here and many of us are still thinking about football.  The Falcons might have had a rough year on the field but their future is looking bright above it.  The new Mercedes-Benz stadium now being built is expected to be a masterpiece of engineering and venue design.  Perhaps its biggest appeal among tech geeks, however, will be the gargantuan, ring-shaped video board that will be installed.  This massive, LED video board stretches around the inner circumference of the stadium’s dome.

South Dakota-based firm Daktronics is building the stadium’s video board.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Tim Tucker quotes Daktronics’ CEO, Reece Kurtenbach as saying, “This ‘halo’ display is really a test of engineering capabilities and architecture coordination that our team at Daktronics is proud to accomplish.”

Just how large will this new halo video board be?  The Falcon’s official Twitter account described it as, “When laid flat and straight, the 360-degree halo board in Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be 1,100 linear feet long.”  As you can see in this graphic, that measurement exceeds the height of the Eiffel Tower.  It’s also 58 feet tall, making the total display size a whopping 63,800 square feet!  These measurements make the video board “three times as large as the current, largest, single display board in the NFL.”

We might not be able to gush about the Falcons’ record this season, but the new video board at Mercedes-Benz stadium will certainly be a point of pride for the team and the city.
